The Vice-Chancellor of the newly established Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES), Iyin-Ekiti, has pledged that the institution will play a leading role in driving Nigeria’s technological advancement, environmental sustainability, and economic development through the training of highly skilled professionals. Professor Gbenga Aribisala made the commitment in an interview, outlining the university’s mission and potential impact on national development.
FUTES, which began academic activities recently with its first cohort of about 1,500 students, was created to produce graduates equipped with specialised knowledge and practical skills that address contemporary challenges in science, technology, and environmental disciplines. Aribisala described the university’s establishment as a strategic response to Nigeria’s need for a competitive advantage in emerging industries and sustainable development sectors.
“As a pioneer vice-chancellor, I am very pleased that we have successfully commenced academic programmes and are already training the next generation of innovators,” he said. “Our focus is on producing graduates who will position Nigeria competitively in technology and environmental sciences.”
The academic structure at FUTES includes faculties such as Engineering and Technology, Natural and Applied Sciences, Computing, and Environmental Sciences, designed to deliver cutting-edge programmes that reflect global trends and industry needs. Courses span areas including computing, forensic science, environmental biology, toxicology, animal and environmental biology, among others, with the aim of nurturing professionals capable of creating innovative solutions to national challenges.
Aribisala emphasised that the university’s curriculum is tailored to blend theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing graduates not only for local demand but also for global opportunities. “We want our students to be problem-solvers and leaders in technology, sustainability, and scientific discovery. They should be able to drive innovation that supports economic growth and environmental stewardship,” he said.
He further noted that FUTES has recruited some of Nigeria’s top scholars, enhancing the quality of teaching and research. The presence of leading academics is expected to elevate the standard of education and ensure that graduates are well-prepared for the demands of a rapidly changing world.
The vice-chancellor also acknowledged the role of federal support in the university’s takeoff, commending the government for providing substantial funding that positions FUTES for success. This investment, he said, will help the institution establish a strong foundation for academic excellence, research output, and industry partnerships.
FUTES’s mission aligns with broader national priorities to cultivate skilled manpower in critical sectors such as technology, environmental science, and innovation — sectors that are increasingly recognised as drivers of long-term economic growth. The university’s focus on producing graduates capable of addressing climate change, digital transformation, and sustainable development reflects Nigeria’s aspirations to diversify its economy and enhance its global competitiveness.
As the institution continues to grow, it is expected to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s development agenda by equipping students with the expertise needed to lead in tech-driven industries, environmental research, and sustainable entrepreneurship. With a clear mandate to foster expertise at the intersection of technology and environmental stewardship, FUTES is positioning itself as a pivotal force in shaping the country’s future workforce and innovative capacity.
