President Bola Tinubu is currently holding a closed-door meeting with Nigeria’s Service Chiefs at the Presidential Villa in Aso Rock, Abuja. The high-level security meeting, which began around 6:01pm local time today, is taking place amid increasing concerns about the country’s internal security situation.
The security chiefs arrived at the Villa’s forecourt early in the evening and were quickly ushered into the President’s office under tight security arrangements.
This marks President Tinubu’s first meeting with the military high command since recent changes in Nigeria’s defence leadership. General Christopher Musa (retd.) was sworn in as the new Minister of Defence on December 4, signaling a fresh approach to the nation’s security architecture.
The meeting comes at a particularly critical time for Nigeria’s security. Over 100 students abducted from a Catholic boarding school in November remain in captivity, sparking nationwide concern and renewed calls for decisive government action.
The discussions follow several significant security developments, including President Tinubu’s declaration of a national security emergency last month. At that time, he ordered immediate recruitment of new personnel into security agencies and directed the withdrawal of police officers attached to VIPs to strengthen internal security operations.
The closed-door talks also occur just days after the Senate approved the President’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Benin Republic in connection with an attempted coup in the neighboring country, raising broader regional security concerns.
While the specific agenda of the meeting has not been officially disclosed, the timing suggests it may address these pressing security challenges facing the nation.
