The first group of Nigerian athletes for the 2025 Africa Youth Games in Luanda departed the country on Monday, December 8, as preparations for the continent’s premier youth sporting event reached their peak. This marks a crucial moment for Nigeria’s young sports talents, many of whom are getting the opportunity to represent their country on a major international stage for the first time. Coaches, officials, and support staff accompanied the athletes to ensure that all arrangements were in place for a smooth departure and successful participation.

Team Nigeria will feature 86 athletes competing across 12 sports disciplines, including athletics, badminton, boxing, beach volleyball, cycling, judo, golf, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, and weightlifting. Each athlete has undergone months of rigorous training and selection trials to earn their place in the squad. The team also includes a number of emerging stars who have shown tremendous promise in national and regional competitions, reflecting the growing depth of talent in Nigerian youth sports.

Scheduled to run from December 10 to 20, 2025, the Africa Youth Games are a milestone event, with Angola becoming the first Portuguese-speaking nation to host the tournament. The games are recognized as a critical platform for identifying and nurturing young athletes across Africa, providing them with a unique opportunity to gain international exposure, build experience, and compete at a high level. The event also fosters sportsmanship, discipline, and dedication, values that are essential for the development of the continent’s future sporting champions.

Competition will take place in six host cities, including Luanda, Benguela, and Bengo, accommodating athletes aged 14 to 17 from as many as 54 African countries. The multi-city format allows for the inclusion of diverse sporting venues and promotes wider community engagement in Angola. It also gives the young athletes a chance to experience different environments, manage travel logistics, and adapt to varying competition conditions—important skills for those aspiring to compete at the Olympic level and beyond.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) highlighted that the games are designed not only to nurture talent but also to increase youth involvement in sports, improve fitness levels, and prepare athletes for international competitions. The event will also serve as a qualifying stage for the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games, offering selected athletes a chance to progress to an even larger platform. Beyond the competition itself, the games provide a rich environment for cultural exchange, friendship, and cooperation among young people from across the continent, strengthening ties between nations and promoting unity through sport.

Officials from the NSC and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) expressed confidence in Team Nigeria’s preparedness, citing the extensive training programs, participation in local and regional tournaments, and dedicated support from coaches and technical staff. They believe the athletes are well-equipped to perform admirably and showcase the talent, discipline, and determination of Nigerian youth.

As the athletes embark on their journey to Angola, the nation’s eyes will be on them, hoping they make a strong impression and return home with medals, experience, and valuable lessons that will inspire the next generation of Nigerian sports stars.
