The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for maintaining neutrality during Saturday’s Anambra State governorship election, describing his stance as a strong defense of Nigeria’s democracy.
The commendation was contained in a statement issued on Monday in Lagos by the party’s spokesperson, Mr. Seye Oladejo. He said the President’s decision not to interfere in the electoral process demonstrated his commitment to credible elections and the deepening of democratic values.
“The President has once again shown that he remains the most credible defender of Nigeria’s democracy by encouraging transparency and refusing to interfere in the electoral process,” Oladejo said.
He noted that Tinubu’s neutrality reaffirmed his reputation as a true democrat and further strengthened public confidence in the country’s electoral system. Oladejo added that such restraint was a departure from the old order where incumbents often influenced outcomes to favor their political allies.
The Lagos APC spokesperson also lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for what he described as the credible and transparent conduct of the election under its new leadership. According to him, the Anambra election reflected “a bold and refreshing new dawn in Nigeria’s democratic experience.”
Oladejo, however, took a swipe at the opposition parties, saying the outcome of the election exposed their internal divisions and lack of structure. He described the opposition coalition as “paper-thin” and “a gathering of political wanderers and competing egoists.”
“The result shows that the so-called coalition lacks vision, organization, and national appeal,” Oladejo stated. “A group that cannot win in its own stronghold should stop dreaming of national victory.”
He emphasized that while the opposition continued to look for excuses, the APC would remain focused on governance and reforms aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians. According to him, the ruling party remains the only political organization in the country with true national depth, structure, and discipline.
“The Anambra election is a warning to the opposition that the era of emotional blackmail is over,” he added.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had on Sunday declared the incumbent governor, Prof. Charles Soludo of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), winner of the governorship election after polling 422,664 votes.
His closest rival, Nicholas Ukachukwu of the APC, garnered 99,445 votes, while Paul Chukwuma of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) came third with 37,753 votes. John Nwosu of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) scored 8,208 votes, while George Moghalu of the Labour Party (LP) and Jude Ezenwafor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) polled 10,576 and 1,401 votes respectively.
Oladejo congratulated the winner, noting that the peaceful conduct of the poll and the President’s non-interference had reaffirmed Nigeria’s democratic progress. He urged all political stakeholders to respect the will of the people and work collectively towards national unity and development.
