Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has written to former United States President Donald Trump, commending him for his recent remarks about what he described as the “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
In the letter dated November 6, 2025, Kanu praised Trump’s “bold stance” and said the atrocities extend beyond Christians to include adherents of the Judeo-Christian faith, claiming to possess documentary evidence of such attacks. The letter, made available through his lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, described Trump’s observations as “factual and verifiable.”
Kanu wrote,
“Your declaration that the U.S. is prepared to act militarily or suspend aid if Nigeria fails to protect Christians has restored hope among millions abandoned by the world. You have seen the truth: Christians in Nigeria face an existential threat.”
The IPOB leader further alleged that the violence is not confined to the North but has “spread into the Igbo heartland,” targeting Judeo-Christian communities under the guise of counter-terrorism.
He recounted his abduction from Kenya in June 2021, which he described as an extraordinary rendition in violation of international law, and noted that despite being discharged and acquitted by the Court of Appeal in October 2022, he remains in detention in Abuja.
Kanu wrote that the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention had also declared his continued imprisonment as “unlawful and politically motivated.”
According to him,
“The Nigerian government defied its judiciary and continues to silence a Judeo-Christian voice. This is a hidden genocide unfolding in Eastern Nigeria.”
Kanu accused security agencies of complicity in killings of IPOB members and Judeo-Christians while granting amnesty to terrorists and bandits. He called on Trump to support the creation of a U.S.-led international commission of inquiry to investigate the alleged genocide.
He referenced multiple incidents, including the Nkpor Biafra Heroes Day massacre of May 30, 2016, and the Port Harcourt killings of IPOB members in January 2017 during a pro-Trump rally.
Kanu also alleged that the Nigerian state is “weaponizing insecurity” to criminalize IPOB, while “state-backed militias” perpetrate attacks blamed on “unknown gunmen.” He claimed that over 2,000 Igbo youths have been killed between 2021 and 2025 in what he termed “counter-terrorism operations.”
Concluding his letter, Kanu urged Trump to:

Initiate a U.S.-supervised probe into mass killings in Eastern Nigeria,

Convene Congressional hearings on the alleged Igbo-Christian genocide,

Impose Magnitsky Act sanctions on officials implicated in the violence, and

Support a referendum on Igbo self-determination under international law.
He ended with a symbolic appeal:
“History will judge us by what we do when genocide knocks. You have the power to prevent another Rwanda in Africa.”
