Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to unveil education sector achievements over a 20-day period in response to recent criticisms by Labour Party leader, Peter Obi.
Speaking on Tuesday during the commissioning of new engineering infrastructure in Wuye District, Abuja, Wike stated that the initiative is aimed at demonstrating the Tinubu administration’s commitment to education in the FCT, not just physical infrastructure.
“We will take 20 days to show Nigerians, to show social media president what we have done in the education sector,” Wike said. “We are going to shock them… so that they will know that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is not only concentrating on the infrastructure in the FCT … it is also focusing on the education sector.”
The minister also challenged critics to identify any past FCT administration that has matched the current pace of project delivery. “If there is any administration since the creation of the FCT that has done more than what we are doing, let them speak up now,” he declared.
Wike’s remarks come in the wake of Peter Obi’s visit to a public primary school in Kapwa, Abuja, where he described the condition of public schools in the capital as “a national disgrace.” Obi criticised the government’s handling of education, calling it evidence of Nigeria’s “hollow commitment to education.”
In a sharp rebuttal, Wike accused Obi of neglecting similar responsibilities during his time as governor of Anambra State. “If he had done all the roads during his eight years, nobody would be talking about developing Anambra today,” Wike said.
He further revealed that 73 schools across the six area councils of the FCT are currently undergoing renovation, with 21 already completed — statistics which, according to him, contradict Obi’s claims.
Wike concluded by saying that after the 20-day showcase, his administration would pause further commissioning ceremonies to focus more directly on the education sector.
