Nigeria’s U-17 women’s squad, known as the Flamingos, are desperate for a turnaround as they lock horns with France in their second Group D fixture at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco later today (Wednesday). The team heads into the match under pressure after suffering a heavy 4–1 defeat to Canada in their opening game.
The young Nigerians struggled defensively in their first outing in Salé, allowing Canada to capitalize on errors despite Queen Joseph’s lone goal for the side. With no points and a goal deficit of three, a win against France at 8 p.m. Nigerian time is vital to keep their tournament dreams alive.
This encounter rekindles memories of their clash 13 years ago in Azerbaijan, when both sides played out a goalless draw before France prevailed 5–3 in a penalty shootout during the quarter-finals.
France, meanwhile, enter the contest brimming with confidence after their 4–2 triumph over Samoa. Famous for their structured style and sharp attacking play, the French will test Coach Bankole Olowookere’s team, who must tighten their defence while being more clinical up front.
Flamingos skipper Shakirat Moshood, speaking to NFF media, assured fans that the team has mentally reset and is fully focused on bouncing back.
“We are not happy about our first game, but for the second match against France, we are going to win because we are ready for them,” she said.
“We have been working very hard for this second match. I know we are going to win by the grace of God.”
The captain explained that the girls have spent time motivating each other and rebuilding team spirit.
“We talked to ourselves and encouraged one another. No matter what, we must always work hard and stay focused while preparing for the next match,” she added.
Moshood also took a moment to address the fans’ disappointment.
“First, I want to say we are sorry for the first game. We promise that in the next match, we are going to do better. We will make Nigerians proud and happy.”
Coach Olowookere has emphasized defensive organisation and smart game management in recent training sessions. The team’s drills have focused on maintaining shape, improving transitions, and handling set-pieces more effectively. Monday’s training was replaced with motivational talks, team-building games, and tactical reviews to help lift morale.
Adding to the encouragement, Super Falcons stars Asisat Oshoala, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Joy Omewa, Taiwo Afolabi, Miracle Usani, and Folashade Ijamilusi sent inspiring video messages to rally the young players ahead of their crucial clash with France.
