The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has strongly criticised Aloy Ejimakor, one of the lead counsels to detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, for participating in a protest led by activist Omoyele Sowore in Abuja.
In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Onanuga said he observed Ejimakor among what he described as a “small group of protesters” mobilised by Sowore to demand Kanu’s release. He dismissed the demonstration as a “shambolic protest” and questioned the propriety of a lawyer actively involved in a case that is still before the courts taking part in such an action.
“Mr. Ejimakor, being a lawyer, ought to know that the case is sub judice. The prosecution has concluded its case, and it is now incumbent upon Mr. Ejimakor and the other lawyers to mount a strong defence for Kanu,” Onanuga wrote.
He accused the lawyer of abandoning legal channels in favour of “extra-legal tactics” by aligning himself with Sowore, whom he referred to as a “career anarchist.”
Onanuga further argued that Ejimakor’s participation in the protest raises serious questions about his adherence to professional legal ethics and urged relevant legal authorities to examine the matter for possible sanctions.
The protest, held earlier on Monday near the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, was forcefully dispersed by security forces using tear gas and gunfire into the air. It was organised to demand the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, whose prolonged detention has continued to spark national and international criticism.
Ejimakor has not publicly responded to Onanuga’s accusations at the time of reporting.
