Wike challenges Obi’s credibility, accuses him of neglecting Anambra projects

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has taken a swipe at Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his recent comments alleging government neglect of public schools across Nigeria.

Speaking on Thursday during the commissioning of newly constructed roads in the Mabushi District of Abuja, Wike questioned Obi’s sincerity and record in governance, drawing attention to his eight-year tenure as governor of Anambra State.

The FCT Minister accused Obi of failing to complete key development projects during his time in office, alleging instead that he diverted public funds for private financial gains.

“Peter Obi, you were governor for eight years in Anambra State. If you had completed your projects, nobody would still be talking about developing Anambra today,” Wike said. “Instead of developing the state, you diverted funds and invested them in the bank where you had an interest — Fidelity Bank. That’s not love for the people.”

Comparing Obi’s administration with his own performance in the FCT, Wike insisted that his two years in office had yielded tangible results, particularly in infrastructure and public service delivery.

“Mr. Obi, we’ve been in office for just two years, not even four, and look at what we’ve achieved in the FCT. Compare that to your eight years in Anambra. Can you truly say you love your state or this country? If I were you, I’d stay quiet,” Wike added.

The former Rivers State governor also dismissed Obi’s recent decision to celebrate his birthday at an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, describing it as a publicity stunt rather than a show of empathy.

“You don’t prove you love Nigeria by throwing a birthday party in an IDP camp,” he said. “When you were governor, why didn’t you visit the displaced or celebrate with the less privileged? Now that you’re running for president, it suddenly becomes a strategy. Nigerians are not deceived.”

Wike used the occasion to commend Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Damian Dodo, for drawing attention to the poor state of Ken Udezue Street, which has now been rehabilitated. He described Dodo as a model of responsible citizenship.

“A good citizen doesn’t just complain on social media,” Wike said. “They take action and engage government constructively. That’s what Mr. Dodo did, and today that street has been fixed. We appreciate him and will honor him for his civic responsibility.”

He further thanked Lubrik Construction and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) for their commitment to delivering quality infrastructure across the city, noting that more projects would soon be unveiled.

In her closing remarks, Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, praised President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, saying Wike’s leadership had revitalized infrastructure development and strengthened Abuja’s role as the nation’s capital.

She appealed to residents to maintain the new facilities, emphasizing that they were built for the comfort, safety, and progress of all citizens.
