President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the appointment of Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The request was conveyed in a letter read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary. The nomination, according to the letter, complies with constitutional provisions that require Senate confirmation for key national appointments.
Akpabio also read other communications from the President concerning various appointments needing legislative approval. Amupitan’s nomination has been referred to the Senate Committee of the Whole for further consideration.
The nomination comes following the exit of former INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu. Last Thursday, Tinubu had submitted Amupitan’s name as his preferred nominee to lead the electoral body. The nomination received unanimous endorsement from the Council of State, which includes former presidents and heads of state.
Addressing the Council, President Tinubu described Prof. Amupitan as an “apolitical” figure with a strong academic and ethical track record. He also noted that Amupitan is the first individual from Kogi State to be nominated for the top INEC position.
Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo, echoed the President’s sentiments, describing the nominee as a “man of integrity.”
Amupitan, 58, is a Professor of Law at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Plateau State, where he currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration). His academic and professional background in constitutional law and governance is seen as a key asset as the nation prepares for future electoral reforms and the 2027 general elections.
The Senate is expected to deliberate on the nomination in the coming days.
