The 2025 Zenith Bank Final Eight competition is creating a buzz at the Indoor Sports Complex in Surulere, Lagos, with First Bank Basketball Club’s head coach, Juliana Akhere, focused on steering her team toward victory.

The Elephant Girls earned their spot in this year’s playoffs through the Atlantic Conference and have hit the ground running. They started their campaign with a convincing 53-36 win over Bayelsa Blue Whales, then followed it up by edging out Royal Aces of Abuja 52-44, putting them in a strong position to reach the semi-finals. Their impressive start has been powered by a combination of sharp shooting, disciplined defense, and the ability to adapt to the challenges posed by different opponents.

Speaking after the victories, Akhere said,“For me, every game I go into, I go in with everything I’ve got. I don’t leave anything unturned. So, we went in with everything. Along the line, we had a few obstacles, but thankfully, we were able to make quick adjustments and then we took the victory. But it wasn’t easy. No one comes here to just make up the numbers; they are all prepared. That’s why they made it to the final eight.”

On her hopes for the later stages, she added, “Success comes first from God, then from the hard work of the team and coaching staff. The unity and commitment within our squad, along with Coach Seun’s guidance, have been outstanding. I believe we have what it takes to lift the trophy.” Akhere’s focus on teamwork and preparation underscores First Bank’s strategy of balancing individual talent with collective effort, which has proven crucial in high-stakes games.

Day three promises more drama. Bayelsa Blue Whales clash with Royal Aces for a likely semi-final spot, Dolphins take on Nigeria Customs, MFM face Titans Basketball Club, and First Bank wrap up the evening against Air Warriors. Each of these matches carries significant weight, as the winners move closer to the semi-finals, while the losers face an uphill battle to stay in contention.

Dolphins continue to impress, securing their second group-stage win with a 63-39 thrashing of Titans, following a stunning 51-41 victory over reigning champions MFM. They look poised to join First Bank in the last four. The team’s resilience and ability to execute under pressure have made them one of the most exciting sides to watch in the competition so far.

MFM bounced back from their opening defeat with a commanding 78-42 win over Nigeria Customs, firing from beyond the three-point line and controlling the game from start to finish. Customs, meanwhile, remain in search of their first victory, highlighting the tough nature of the competition and the high standards required to succeed at this level.

Bayelsa Blue Whales finally recorded a win, defeating Air Warriors 65-47. From the opening tip, they took control and never looked back, keeping their hopes alive in the competition. The Whales’ ability to recover and respond under pressure demonstrates the competitive spirit that has kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout the playoffs.

With the Final Eight now entering its critical stages, teams are showing why they deserve to be in the tournament, and the battle for the championship is set to become even more intense in the coming days. Fans can expect thrilling action, surprising upsets, and moments of brilliance as the playoffs continue.
