Afrobeats sensation Tiwa Savage is once again making headlines this time for revealing details about a past relationship with a fellow celebrity who insisted on keeping their romance private.
Speaking on the Joe Budden Podcast, the award-winning artist shared the emotional toll of dating someone in the public eye who refused to publicly acknowledge their relationship.
“I am a public figure, and so is he. He told me he didn’t want us to go public,” Tiwa recounted.
However, the issue wasn’t privacy itself, it was the disrespect that came with secrecy. According to Tiwa, even when they attended the same events, her then-partner would openly flirt with other women in her presence.
“He’d be at the same event, talking, laughing, even touching other ladies while looking at me like, ‘Don’t worry, I’m just doing it so they won’t suspect.’ And I couldn’t say anything. It was happening right in front of me,” she said.
For Tiwa, the painful part wasn’t just hiding their relationship, it was how far he went to maintain the illusion of being single.
The viral clip sparked a wave of reactions online. Many fans speculated about the identity of the “mystery man” and shared their opinions on the difficult balance celebrities must strike between public image and private life.
One fan remarked:“Fame really costs a lot. You can tell Tiwa just wants to be happy, but because she has money and success, men who have more are often either married or not what she wants. She ends up dating down and still gets hurt.”
Tiwa has been candid about her struggles in love. In a recent interview with Capital Xtra, she admitted:
“I used to make mistakes, dating down, saying I don’t care if you’re not making money, it’s just love. But now, I think I need someone who just has money. Love is nice, but you can judge me for wanting a wealthier person if you want.”
Tiwa’s experience reflects a broader issue in celebrity culture: many public figures choose to keep their romantic lives under wraps. Whether to protect their brand, maintain fan appeal, or simply for peace of mind, privacy often becomes a necessity.
Singer Chike, in an interview with Chude Jideonwo, explained why he avoids public relationships:
“If I go public with a relationship, I’ll lose a lot of female fans.”
This sentiment is common among male celebrities who fear losing public affection and attention. Others believe romantic relationships can be a distraction from their careers or invite unnecessary scrutiny.
While some celebrity relationships have thrived in the public eye, others have crumbled under the spotlight. Ultimately, the choice between privacy and publicity is deeply personal.
However, there’s a fine line between privacy and secrecy. Privacy involves setting healthy boundaries, while secrecy often implies shame or disrespect. Tiwa Savage’s story appears to reflect the latter leading her to walk away from the relationship.
