2027: SDP Rules Out Merger, Vows to Field Strong Presidential Candidate — Aiyenigba

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) will not be part of any political coalition or merger ahead of the 2027 general elections, says the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Araba Rufus Aiyenigba. He emphasized that the SDP is focused on strengthening its internal structures and fielding a credible presidential candidate.

In an exclusive interview, Aiyenigba described the party as being in “good shape,” following key internal reforms and structural expansion from the National Working Committee (NWC) down to the ward level.

Aiyenigba revealed that the party has undergone a “cleansing operation,” which led to the suspension of its National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, and two others over allegations of maladministration and constitutional violations.

He accused Gabam of avoiding statutory meetings, failing to convene the National Executive Committee (NEC) since 2022, and ignoring other responsibilities. “It didn’t just happen overnight. It took time, but we had to act,” he stated.

Following the suspension, the Deputy National Chairman (North), Abubakar Gombe, has assumed the position of Acting National Chairman, in line with the party’s constitution. The party’s national convention is scheduled for early 2026.

Responding to reports of a faction led by Modibbo and some aggrieved members, Aiyenigba insisted there are no factions recognized by law, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), or security agencies. He cited a recent FCT police letter affirming Dr. Olu Agunloye as the legally recognized National Secretary.

Aiyenigba dismissed ongoing coalition talks, describing them as driven by individuals seeking presidential platforms rather than national interest.

He disclosed that some coalition leaders tried to trade nine out of 15 NWC positions, including the National Chairman and Secretary, in exchange for SDP’s participation. “We refused. We are not transactional. We will not dissolve our party or change its identity for political expediency,” he declared.

However, he clarified that the SDP remains open to alliances based on shared values, not power grabs or mergers

The party confirmed it will field a presidential candidate in 2027. While Prince Adewole Adebayo, the SDP’s 2023 flagbearer, remains a visible presence, Aiyenigba noted that other contenders are expected to emerge.

“Our presidential ticket has always been strongly contested  from 2019 to 2023. The same will happen in 2026. Whoever emerges will be someone who can represent the party with distinction,” he said.

On the recent bye-elections, Aiyenigba criticized INEC’s performance, citing widespread electoral malpractice, including vote-buying and ballot stuffing. He called for “fundamental electoral reforms” and urged that the next INEC chairman must restore credibility to the electoral process.
