2027: Between Politics, Ambition And Country First II

I am encouraged by the deluge of reaction to the first part of this patriotic effort. Indeed the purpose is to elicit debate and situate the politics of 2027 properly. We must raise the bar beyond the banal issues that deepen our fault lines ditto religion and region (creed and clan) to issues that centre on competency, capacity, compassion, character, credibility and commitment to the common good.

To defeat the present underperforming, underwhelming and uneventful administration in 2027, we must as a People put forth our best foot. We must use the Aspirant/Candidate with the greatest public appeal, with the clearest vision, with the greatest commitment to the common good, with love for Country, with infectious and endearing character and credibility, and the one who comes with competency and capacity. Our candidate must not be about politics alone, our candidate must exude great love for Country and for the people. Anything else will be making victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu a walk in the park.

In consonance with the purpose of this series, I have elected to start with the person of the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria from May 5, 2010 to May 29, 2015. Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been in the news lately because some political operators driven by egocentric ambition believe that should he run for 2027 and win that the Constitution forbids his seeking reelection having served out his first term between 2011-2015. It is more about zoning, power rotation, political interests, tenure/term, and the political class than about Country. To those beating the drum it doesn’t matter whether Jonathan is ready or not.

The RUN, JONATHAN RUN fervour is a contrived call to serve political interests NOT the nation. Interestingly his wife Dame Patience Jonathan has repeatedly distanced herself from efforts to drag her husband back to the Soapbox. She doesn’t think it is right, she believes in the Tinubu Presidency, and doesn’t think her husband can do any better. Why therefore are some Politrickcal Operators of the PDP bent neckbent on dragging former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest for the high office of President come 2027?

On RUN, JONATHAN RUN, I think that patriots and true lovers of our former President should clearly admonish GEJ, RUN, JONATHAN RUN away from those who seek to rubbish everything left of your legacy by drafting you into a race that you can’t win. RUN, JONATHAN RUN far away from those who seek to remind Nigerians how you romanticized corruption, never punishing your manifestly corrupt appointees, how undecided you were about effectively fighting insurgency and terror, remember the kidnap of the innocents of Chibok, how you inherited an economy that was boisterous but left an economy that struggled to pay the salary of Federal Civil Servants, Prof Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala said her repeated warnings were not heeded, and come to think of it, do you think that those calling on you to run care a hoot about what happens when you lose?

Nigeria has suffered untold ruin in the hands of unwilling and unprepared rulers, the difference between your time in office and the present watch is the fact that you inherited a boisterous economy and did little, whereas BAT inherited a bad economy and has made it worse, here I’m talking about impact on the masses NOT Statistics, and what is common to your watch and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s Presidency is FAILURE. Do not let them deceive or goad you into a race that is apparently dead on arrival, do not GEJ.

Listen to your Dear Wife, listen to your many admirers, listen to the people who are calling for a new deal, a new day, a new republic, and a new tendency in leadership, listen very well and you will know that their call is not for your return to Aso Rock. Listen, and you will hear them saying RUN, JONATHAN RUN far away from those who are determined to rubbish everything that you have going for you presently. Listen GEJ, please listen to your True Friends.

I shall dive deeper and tell you more about why RUN, JONATHAN RUN For President is not only great disservice to nation but a poisoned chalice that will do GEJ himself no good, but that is where the preponderance of feedback compels me to do so.

Like I promised I shall make every part of this series short so we can all enjoy this walk in the boulevard called Patriotism. Your reaction and feedback shall determine what more we must debate about GEJ possibly throwing his hat in the ring. This is obviously going to be a long rendezvous with TRUTH keeping 2027 in view.
