Asisat Oshoala’s U.S. club, Bay FC, set a new record in the National Women’s Soccer League by attracting over 40,000 spectators to Oracle Park on Saturday for their match against the Washington Spirit.

Oshoala did not take the field, remaining on the bench, but fellow Nigerian Gift Monday entered the game for the visiting side.

A historic crowd of 40,061 fans filled the San Francisco Giants stadium, giving the NWSL its largest standalone audience ever during Bay FC’s hosting of the Washington Spirit.

The Spirit quickly built a 3-0 advantage, but Bay FC responded with two late goals to narrow the deficit, creating an intense finish. Ultimately, the visitors held on for a 3-2 win.

The previous record for a single NWSL game was set last year when 35,038 people attended Bay FC’s contest against the Chicago Stars at Wrigley Field.

Bay FC now aims to build on the excitement from this record-breaking match despite the loss, as they travel to face Angel City FC on September 1 before returning home to host KC Current on September 6.
