The Sokoto State Government has donated 20 outboard engines to six riverine local government areas following a recent boat accident that left many missing.
Deputy Governor Idris Mohammed Gobir announced the intervention during a condolence visit to Kojiyo village in Goronyo Local Government Area, where the tragic incident occurred over the weekend.
He said the engines will be distributed to the local governments of Goronyo, Isa, Sabon Birni, Wamakko, Shagari, and Kware to enhance water transport safety and prevent future accidents.
“The state government is deeply concerned about the recurring boat mishaps. These engines aim to improve safety for communities that rely on water transportation,” Gobir stated.
Gobir also revealed that Governor Ahmed Aliyu has ordered the swift completion of a major road and bridge project in the area. Additionally, the government has provided ₦20 million and 100 bags of grains as relief for affected families.
“We offer prayers for the safe return of those still missing and strength for the bereaved families,” he added.
Chairman of Goronyo LGA, Engineer Zubairu Yari, explained that the accident happened around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. A wooden boat carrying about 50 passengers and nine motorcycles capsized due to overloading and rough winds. Only four passengers were rescued, and six motorcycles have been recovered so far.
Most of the victims were traders from Gada and nearby communities. Local divers and emergency responders from Silame and Argungu are leading rescue efforts.
Shehu Aliyu Kafin-Daji, Head of Operations at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Sokoto, confirmed their team was immediately deployed to assist.
“Search and rescue operations are ongoing. If no additional survivors are found after 24 hours, we may have to shift into recovery mode,” he said.
