Muhammadu Buhari, former military head of state (1983–1985) and democratically elected president (2015–2023), has died at the age of 82 in a clinic in London, his family confirmed today.

According to a statement shared by Buhari’s former special adviser, Bashir Ahmad, and spokesperson Garba Shehu on X/Twitter, the family announced:

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”

Buhari was born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State. He rose through military ranks to become a Major General. He first led Nigeria as military ruler from December 31, 1983, until August 27, 1985, after which he returned to civilian life. In 2015, he was elected democratically, winning reelection in 2019, and served until May 29, 2023.

Nigeria Mourns a Complex Legacy

Buhari was widely praised for his uncompromising stance against corruption and efforts to reform Nigeria’s economy. However, his terms were also marked by significant challenges, including persistent security crises (such as Boko Haram insurgency), economic turbulence, and criticism over human rights concerns.

What Happens Next?

  • Family Announcement & Burial: The Buhari family, in accordance with Islamic traditions, will soon announce funeral and burial details.

  • National Reaction: Expect outpourings of national grief, official mourning, and widespread condolence messages from political figures, both at home and abroad.

  • Historical Impact: Buhari’s death marks the conclusion of a prominent chapter in Nigeria’s contemporary history, spanning military rule and a full democratic tenure. Analysts will now reassess his long-term role in Nigeria’s political evolution and ongoing development.

A Farewell to Nigeria’s Former Leader

Muhammadu Buhari remains a towering figure in Nigerian history, his death herald’s national soul-searching and reflection. His legacy is multifaceted, with fervent supporters highlighting his anti-corruption campaigns, and critics pointing to unmet expectations. As Nigeria prepares for this momentous transition, questions loom about how it honors his memory and navigates future governance challenges.

Further updates on state honors, funeral protocols, and national responses will follow as official information is released.
