Vice-President Kashim Shettima has urged the National Assembly to prioritize national unity and development over political divisions and partisan interests. He made this call on Monday during an Iftar hosted by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, for the leadership and members of the House of Representatives.
Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Shettima emphasized that lawmakers should approach their responsibilities with humility and a collective commitment to progress. He stated, “History will judge us not by the personal battles we fought, but by the bridges we built together.”
Shettima also called for deep reflection during the sacred month of Ramadan, which coincides with the Lenten season. He stressed the importance of choosing stability over strife and collaboration over conflict, stating, “What unites us as a nation is far greater than what divides us.”
Commending President Tinubu’s leadership, Shettima described him as a “man of vision and inclusivity,” who values trust and sees lawmakers as partners in Nigeria’s democratic journey. “In President Tinubu, you have not just a leader you can trust, but a leader who trusts you,” he said.
The Vice-President also highlighted the progress made in the economy under the current administration, noting that Nigeria is now on the path to sustained economic growth. He emphasized that with perseverance, Nigeria would become a place where every citizen can thrive.
Shettima praised the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, and the leadership for fostering unity within the legislature. He stated, “There can be no development without peace, and no peace without development. The unity in the House reflects our collective resolve to move Nigeria forward.”
He urged leaders to govern with empathy, fairness, and justice, reminding them that leadership is a sacred trust. “Leadership is not about personal gain; it is about service,” Shettima said.
Earlier, Speaker Abbas thanked President Tinubu for the Iftar invitation and for his continued respect for the House of Representatives. He encouraged both Christians and Muslims to use the fasting period to reflect and pray for the country, its leaders, and citizens. “As Nigerians, we know the progress made under this administration, and now is the time for reflection and prayer for the nation’s future,” he said.
Abbas also pledged that every member of the House supports the President and his policies for the betterment of the country. Additionally, on behalf of the House, Abbas donated N705 million to President Tinubu, representing a six-month 50% salary deduction to support the President’s humanitarian efforts and aid vulnerable Nigerians.
