Canada’s incoming prime minister, Mark Carney, delivered a strong message to the United States on Sunday, pledging to confront US President Donald Trump’s trade policies head-on.

In his first speech as leader, Carney, who was overwhelmingly elected by the Liberal Party to succeed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, emphasized his commitment to protecting “the Canadian way of life.”

“We didn’t ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when the gloves are dropped,” Carney told a cheering crowd in Ottawa. “So, Americans, make no mistake—whether it’s trade or hockey, Canada will win.”

The 59-year-old, who will take office in the coming days, has already made it clear that standing up to Trump will be a central part of his leadership. However, Carney’s tenure may be brief as Canada must hold elections by October, and there’s speculation of a snap poll in the near future. Recent polls suggest that the opposition Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, could be favored.

‘Existential Challenge’

In his victory speech, Carney voiced concern over what he described as the United States under Trump seeking to take control of Canada’s resources, land, and sovereignty.

“The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, and our country,” Carney declared. “These are dark days, brought on by a country we can no longer trust.”

He criticized Trump’s actions, accusing him of targeting Canadian workers, families, and businesses. “We cannot let him succeed,” Carney added, calling on Canadians to unite in defense of their way of life.

Carney, the former head of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, triumphed in the leadership race, securing 85.9% of the vote, far ahead of his main opponent, former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, who received just 8%.

During his campaign, Carney pledged to stand up to Trump, whose erratic trade policies and threats of annexation have rattled Canada. The US president’s trade actions, particularly tariffs, have deeply impacted the Canadian economy, with uncertainty over the future of trade relations.

Facing Trump’s Challenge

In his farewell speech, outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned that Canada faces an “existential challenge” from its southern neighbor.

The Liberal Party is optimistic about Carney’s chances against Conservative leader Poilievre in the next election, especially with Carney’s experience in managing economic crises. Party loyalists believe Carney is the best candidate to take on Trump.

Carney, who led the Bank of Canada through the 2008-2009 financial crisis and managed the Bank of England during the tumultuous Brexit period, has presented himself as a seasoned leader who can effectively deal with global challenges. Recent polling suggests Canadians trust Carney more than Poilievre to handle Trump, with 43% backing Carney versus 34% for the Conservative leader.

Before his appointment, Carney made a significant fortune as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs, later serving as a United Nations envoy to promote climate-friendly technology investments. However, Carney has never held an elected office, which some analysts believe could be a weakness in an election battle against a well-established Conservative Party.

Political analysts caution that Carney’s untested campaign skills may pose a challenge. “He is unproven in the crucible of an election,” said Cameron Anderson, a political scientist at Western University. “But his tough anti-Trump rhetoric is exactly what many Canadians want to hear.”

A Shifting Political Landscape

Before Carney’s leadership bid, the Liberals were facing a potential electoral loss. However, with his leadership victory and the ongoing influence of Trump’s policies, the race has tightened significantly.

“We were written off just four months ago, and now we’re right back where we should be,” said former MP Frank Baylis, who also ran for the Liberal leadership.
