Supporters of Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, were dispersed by the Nigeria Police Force after they attempted to gain access to the National Assembly Complex.
The supporters had gathered at the assembly gate early on Tuesday morning, coinciding with the resumption of plenary and a scheduled hearing by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions. Police officers deployed at the scene used tear gas to break up the crowd and prevent any disturbances.
Reports indicate that after being dispersed, the protesters relocated to Unity Fountain to continue their demonstration.
The protest comes after Akpoti-Uduaghan’s clash with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements in the Senate on February 20. The Kogi lawmaker has since been referred to the Senate’s ethics committee for further investigation. Last Friday, Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, alleging that he attempted to malign her after she rejected his advances.
