President Bola Tinubu has named Shamsedeen Ogunjimi as the new Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), with his tenure set to begin on March 7, 2025, following the retirement of the incumbent, Oluwatoyin Madehin.
Ogunjimi, 57, was initially announced as Madehin’s successor in December 2024. His appointment was finalized after a rigorous selection process conducted by a committee responsible for evaluating Directors of Accounts in the Federal Civil Service.
The selection process included a written assessment, an ICT proficiency test, and oral interviews, reflecting Tinubu’s commitment to transparency and merit-based public service appointments.
In a statement on Tuesday, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, emphasized the significance of the appointment.
“The selection process underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to promoting transparency, excellence, and competence in key public service positions,” the statement read.
Ogunjimi, a graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accountancy and a Master’s in Accounting and Finance from the University of Lagos. He is also a fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, bringing extensive expertise to his new role.
President Tinubu congratulated Ogunjimi on his appointment, urging him to uphold integrity, professionalism, and dedication in managing Nigeria’s financial affairs.
Ogunjimi assumes the position at a crucial time as Nigeria navigates economic reforms and fiscal challenges. His appointment signals a continued effort to strengthen financial oversight and governance within the Federal Government.
