President Bola Tinubu is currently holding a closed-door meeting with his Sierra Leonean counterpart, Julius Bio, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja. Bio, who arrived at the Villa’s forecourt at 12:22 pm on Monday, was warmly welcomed by the President’s Chief of Staff, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, before being ushered into the meeting.
The two leaders are expected to discuss various matters of mutual interest, as Nigeria and Sierra Leone continue to enjoy strong diplomatic ties. The two nations have maintained a close relationship since their respective independence in the early 1960s—Nigeria in October 1960 and Sierra Leone in April 1961. Both countries are active members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, regularly collaborating on regional peace and development initiatives.
Nigeria’s involvement in Sierra Leone’s peacekeeping efforts during the country’s civil war (1991-2002) remains one of the most significant chapters in the bilateral relationship. Nigeria led the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in supporting Sierra Leone’s government against rebel forces, ultimately restoring stability. Nigerian forces were also instrumental in reinstating President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah after the 1997 military coup, which helped pave the way for the deployment of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone in 1999.
Despite the historic support, trade between Nigeria and Sierra Leone has fluctuated in recent years. In 2023, Nigeria’s exports to Sierra Leone were estimated at around $5.55 million. Key exports from Nigeria to Sierra Leone include fertilizers, electrical equipment, glassware, and various food products such as coffee and spices. In return, Sierra Leone primarily exports animal and vegetable oils, rubber products, machinery, and fish to Nigeria.
The ongoing discussions between Presidents Tinubu and Bio are likely to focus on strengthening these economic ties and exploring new avenues for cooperation in the region.
