Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has strongly criticized Nigeria’s judiciary, labeling it as the “biggest threat” to the country’s democracy.
Obi expressed his concerns about the judiciary’s decline, stating that justice is increasingly being “commodified” and delivered in favor of the highest bidder. “What is coming out of the three arms of government, the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary is disgusting and uninspiring,” Mr Obi said.
Obi’s remarks came during a keynote speech at the fifth memorial of late Justice Anthony Aniagolu. He emphasized the need to protect the independence of the judiciary and promote values such as character, competence, and integrity among jurists and political leaders.
“The Executive show of negative power as seen in Osun State, the reckless Judiciary pronouncement on Rivers State that is capable of threatening democracy, plus the embarrassing scandal from the National Assembly, all combine to give a gloomy picture of our democratic journey.”
The former Anambra governor also lamented the current state of the nation, saying that Nigeria has become a country where “anything goes” and the rule of law is undermined.
