The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has approved a one-year moratorium on new applications for polytechnics and monotechnics, citing the need for proper population management within approved capacities.
However, health institutions have been exempted from the directive due to challenges related to low enrollment rates. This development was disclosed in a statement by the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Idris Bugaje, on Thursday in Kaduna.
According to Bugaje, the moratorium takes immediate effect, meaning all new applications for polytechnics and monotechnics will be suspended for the next 12 months.
Despite the suspension, institutions currently undergoing assessment will be required to pay specific fees to continue their registration process. Bugaje outlined the financial requirements, stating, “Polytechnics awaiting ministerial approval will be required to pay an application fee of N4 million and a processing fee of N2 million per programme of study. Monotechnics, on the other hand, will pay an application fee of N2 million and a processing fee of N1 million per programme of study.”
Applicants have been given a 30-day window to complete payment, failing which their registration process will be terminated.
Meanwhile, new health institutions, which are not affected by the moratorium, will adhere to the same registration fee structure as monotechnics.
The NBTE Executive Secretary emphasized that the decision aims to ensure tertiary Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions are well-regulated and properly populated in line with their approved capacities.
The policy shift is expected to streamline the establishment of technical education institutions while addressing concerns regarding enrollment distribution and resource allocation within Nigeria’s educational sector.
