The First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has generously pledged a donation of N100 million to assist the families affected by the recent tanker explosion at Dikko-Junction, located on the Abuja-Kaduna expressway in Gurara Local Government Area of Niger State. The explosion, which claimed numerous lives, left many families devastated, prompting the First Lady to take swift action in offering support.
Mrs. Tinubu made the announcement during a sympathy visit to Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago at the Government House in Minna, the capital of Niger State, where she expressed her heartfelt condolences to the people of the state and the families of the victims. The visit, which took place yesterday, was a show of solidarity and compassion during this tragic time.
In her remarks, Mrs. Tinubu acknowledged the efforts of Governor Bago and his administration in providing immediate relief to the victims’ families, stating, “We are aware of the tremendous work the governor has done to rehabilitate and support the families affected by this tragedy. As part of our contribution, we are collaborating with the governor’s office to provide financial assistance to nearly 70 families. Each of these families will receive N1 million to help them settle their immediate needs, including covering expenses such as food and other essential supplies. Our prayer is that such a calamity never occurs again.”
Mrs. Tinubu further praised Governor Bago’s ongoing efforts to improve the welfare of the people of Niger State, highlighting his significant strides in the areas of agriculture and infrastructure development. She noted that the governor’s leadership continues to make a positive impact on the state, and her visit was also an opportunity to recognize his work.
In addition to her visit to the Government House, Mrs. Tinubu took the time to meet with two prominent Nigerian leaders, former Military President General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar. She visited both leaders at their private residences in Minna, where she held closed-door meetings with each of them. These meetings, which lasted approximately 35 minutes each, were kept private, and no details about the discussions were shared with the public. The visits were described as strictly personal, and only members of the Niger State Governor’s press crew were allowed access. When questioned about the nature of the meetings, officials indicated that they were for personal and confidential purposes.
Mrs. Tinubu arrived in Minna at around 10:30 a.m., traveling aboard a private aircraft. Upon her arrival at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna, she was warmly received by Governor Muhammad Umaru Bago and his wife, Hajiya Fatima Bago. The Governor expressed his deep appreciation to the First Lady for her thoughtful gesture and for providing much-needed support during this difficult period. He thanked Mrs. Tinubu for her compassion and for standing with the people of Niger State in their time of sorrow.
The First Lady’s visit not only underscored the importance of solidarity in the face of tragedy but also highlighted the ongoing efforts of the federal government and state leadership to provide aid to those in need. The donation, along with the personal visits, demonstrates a commitment to easing the burden on the affected families and ensuring that they receive the assistance required for their recovery.
