The Kano State Hisbah Board has arrested a couple for conducting a marriage ceremony at Banana Restaurant on Zoo Road, Kano. The arrest was carried out by Hisbah personnel on Wednesday night after receiving a tip-off about the event.
Dr. Mujahideen Abubakar, the Deputy Commander General of Operations at the board, confirmed the incident to Punch, stating that the marriage was organized by the man’s friends without the consent of their parents, an act deemed a violation of Sharia law.
According to Hisbah officials, the marriage ceremony, which took place in a public setting without adherence to Islamic legal procedures, was seen as an attempt to circumvent religious customs. The board emphasized that marriage ceremonies should be conducted with full parental consent and in line with Islamic principles.
Following the arrest, the Hisbah Board has launched a manhunt for all guests who participated in what it described as an illegal solemnization. The board reiterated its commitment to upholding Islamic teachings and ensuring compliance with religious laws in the state. It also issued a warning to individuals and establishments against hosting events that violate Sharia regulations.
Authorities have yet to release further details on the couple’s legal status or any potential penalties they may face as investigations continue. Meanwhile, the arrest has sparked debates among Kano residents, with some supporting the enforcement of religious laws while others question the level of interference in personal matters.
The Kano Hisbah Board, a religious police force responsible for enforcing Sharia law in the state, has made similar arrests in the past, particularly in cases involving alleged immoral conduct or violations of Islamic customs. The board has vowed to remain vigilant in monitoring activities that contradict its mandate.
