The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted a consignment of cannabis destined for the United Kingdom, cleverly concealed in a duvet. The seizure was made at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, as part of the agency’s intensified efforts to combat drug trafficking.
In a statement on Saturday, NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi disclosed that the illegal shipment, weighing over 14 kilograms, was uncovered during routine cargo checks at the airport. The items were packaged to appear as ordinary bedding material to evade detection by authorities.
Two suspects linked to the operation were apprehended in connection with the consignment. Babafemi revealed that the suspects were taken into custody after investigations traced the illicit package back to them.
“This interception highlights our commitment to exposing the tactics of drug traffickers who attempt to use deceptive methods to export banned substances,” Babafemi said, urging stakeholders and the public to remain vigilant and supportive of the agency’s mission.
The NDLEA continues to intensify its surveillance and intelligence efforts at key entry and exit points in the country to curb drug trafficking activities. This latest seizure underscores the evolving strategies employed by traffickers and the agency’s determination to counter them.
The suspects are expected to face prosecution, and further investigations are ongoing to uncover any broader network associated with the operation.
