The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has reported that its power lines supplying electricity to various parts of Abuja have been once again sabotaged by vandals. The company issued a statement through its Public Affairs Manager, Ndidi Mbah, confirming that the attack took place early on Friday morning.
It specifically targeted the 132kv transmission line and underground cables responsible for transferring bulk power to the 132kv Central Area substation located in Katampe, within Abuja’s Central Area.
According to the statement, the vandalism disrupted the transmission lines that serve multiple areas of Abuja, including Maitama, Wuse, and Garki. The damage led to a significant loss of over 60 percent of the power supply to these regions, affecting eight distribution feeders linked to the Central Area.
The company expressed deep concern over the ongoing vandalism of critical power infrastructure and assured the public that a team of engineers had been dispatched to the site to expedite repairs and restore power to the affected areas. TCN’s spokesperson appealed to residents to remain patient as efforts to address the damage were underway.
The statement further explained that the sabotage was likely carried out by unknown individuals near the Menillum Park area of Abuja, where 40 meters of 1x500mm conductor were stolen from two of the 132kv transmission lines.
The disruption caused widespread power outages in several districts, including Maitama, Wuse, Jabi, Lifecamp, Asokoro, Utako, Mabushi, and parts of the Presidential Villa. TCN engineers are actively working on-site to fix the damaged cables, and the company urged Nigerians to remain vigilant in safeguarding transmission equipment across the country.
In a related note, last year, the Nigerian government spent N8.8 billion to repair 128 electricity towers damaged by vandals nationwide, from January 20 to November 28.
