Favour Ashe says he is mentally and physically ready for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, expressing confidence as Team Nigeria steps up preparations for the international event.
The Nigerian sprinter, who competes in the men’s 100m and 4x100m relay and is widely known as “The Nigerian Nightmare,” credited the national team’s training camp for improving the athletes’ overall preparedness ahead of the Games.
“Coming into the Commonwealth Games, I would say my mental is in the right spot. I’m ready mentally and physically. This training camp has been a huge boost for the athletes and has put us in a better mental space. So, yes, I would say I’m ready for the Commonwealth Games,” Ashe said.
He also appealed to Nigerians to stand firmly behind Team Nigeria throughout the competition.
“I want Nigerians to support us—not just me, but every athlete representing the country. Family and friends should continue to encourage us and support us in every way they can. Thank you so much,” he added.
As preparations continue, the Federal Government has announced cash rewards for athletes who win medals at the Games. Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, disclosed that gold medallists will receive $3,000, silver medallists $2,000, and bronze medallists $1,500. Coaches of medal-winning athletes will also earn performance bonuses of $5,000. He further revealed that payment of camping allowances has already begun to keep athletes motivated ahead of the competition.
Team Nigeria is expected to parade a formidable squad in Glasgow, featuring world record holder Tobi Amusan, rising sprint star Kayinsola Ajayi, shot put specialist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, para-powerlifting champion Folashade Oluwafemiayo, alongside several other top athletes competing in athletics, boxing, cycling, swimming, weightlifting and para sports.
