The Oyo State Government has filed an 18-count criminal charge against Naomi Silekunola, the former wife, queen of the Ooni of Ife, along with Ibadan-based broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat and Abdulahi Fasasi, Principal of Islamic High School, Bashorun, Ibadan. The charges stem from a tragic stampede at a children’s funfair on December 18, 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 35 children.
The charge sheet, marked I/05C/2025, was filed on January 10, 2025, before the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan. The defendants are accused of conspiracy to commit murder, manslaughter, criminal negligence, and other related offenses, contrary to and punishable under Section 324 of the Criminal Code, CAP 38, Vol II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
The prosecution alleges that the defendants negligently failed to provide adequate security, crowd control mechanisms, and medical facilities during the funfair, leading to the fatal stampede. The charge sheet lists the names and details of 14 out of the 35 children who died in the incident, including Musiliu Sofiat, aged 8, and Lekan Salami, aged 7.
Fasasi faces additional charges, including conspiracy, acceleration of death, negligent acts causing harm, and failure to provide adequate security and medical facilities. The defendants have been in custody since December 24, following their arrest by the police. Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has vowed that the state will prosecute the defendants.
The tragic incident has drawn public outrage, with many calling for swift justice for the victims. The state government’s legal action indicates a determination to hold the accused accountable for their alleged roles in the tragedy.
