Stella Nwadigo, a teacher at Christ-Mitots International School in Ikorodu, Lagos, appeared in court on Thursday, facing charges of physically assaulting a three-year-old student.

The incident came to light after a disturbing video circulated online, showing Nwadigo repeatedly slapping the child, Abayomi Micheal.

During her appearance before Magistrate M.O. Kusanu at the Ogba Magistrate Court, Nwadigo pleaded not guilty to the charges.

An update was posted on X by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency on Thursday which read, “Following the ongoing viral case of child abuse, all concerned parties appeared today, 9th January 2024, at the Ogba Magistrate Court. (sic)

“The matter was assigned to Magistrate M.O. Kusanu. Two charges were read to the suspect, to which she pled not guilty.”

Nwadigo’s defense counsel requested bail, which was set at ₦200,000 with the requirement of two verifiable sureties. Despite this, Nwadigo has been remanded in a correctional facility, awaiting trial scheduled for January 18, 2024.

The case drew widespread attention after a viral video showed Nwadigo repeatedly slapping three-year-old Abayomi while trying to teach him to write the number six.

Following the incident, Nwadigo was suspended by the school’s management, and Abayomi was hospitalized.
