The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has apprehended Khadija Ali, for allegedly abandoning her newborn child. The incident occurred along a secluded path near Crush Rock, behind the unfinished Red Bricks Market in Mpape, Abuja.

A report from the command’s Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, revealed that the baby, believed to be no more than a day old, was found around 10:00 AM on Friday. The discovery followed a distress call, which led officers from the Mpape Division’s Juvenile and Women Care Section to respond promptly.

After being rescued, the baby, wrapped in a cloth, was transported to the Mpape Primary Health Care Centre for immediate medical assessment. Health professionals confirmed that the infant was stable and in good health.

According to Adeh, the police were able to locate Khadija Ali thanks to a tip-off from concerned local residents. During questioning, Ali admitted to abandoning the baby, explaining that she could not care for the child after her husband had deserted her.

The police strongly condemned the act, calling it a serious breach of the child’s rights. Adeh noted that Ali would face legal charges under Sections 14 and 16 of the Child Rights Act of 2003. The police reiterated their commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals in society.

The rescued infant will be transferred to the Department of Social Welfare for proper care, while Ali will face legal consequences upon completion of the investigation, in accordance with the Child Rights Act 2003.
