Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will begin a diplomatic tour of Africa, visiting Nigeria, Namibia, the Republic of the Congo, and Chad from January 5 to 11. This marks the 35th year in a row that China’s foreign minister has chosen an African country as the first overseas destination of the year.
In a statement released on Friday, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted that this visit reflects the importance of strengthening relations between China and Africa. Wang Yi’s trip, at the invitation of these countries, is a continuation of China’s commitment to building strong Sino-African ties.
Ning also referenced proposals made by Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation last year. These proposals include upgrading diplomatic relations to strategic partnerships and elevating China-Africa ties to an “all-weather community with a shared future.” This vision aims to promote modernization in key sectors, focusing on trade, industrialization, infrastructure, and people-to-people exchanges.
Key initiatives include establishing platforms for governance sharing, a China-Africa knowledge network, and creating 25 centers for China-Africa studies. Ning noted that African leaders have responded positively to these proposals.
