Eniola Isaac, a 28-year-old Nigerian woman, is scheduled to return to Nigeria today (Friday), thanks to the efforts of Nigerian officials in Jordan, who also oversee Iraq. The news was made public in a statement released on Thursday via the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission’s (NiDCOM) official X.com account.
A report from Wednesday revealed that Isaac was allegedly misled into traveling to Iraq with promises of a better life. After enduring nearly two years of extreme abuse, physical violence, and degrading treatment from her employer, Isaac reached out to Nigerian authorities, desperately requesting assistance to secure her return and prevent further danger or even death.
NiDCOM’s announcement of her return emphasized that Isaac’s case highlights the growing issue of Nigerian women being trafficked to Iraq through fraudulent promises. The commission also reported that an investigation is underway regarding a separate case of a Nigerian who traveled to Iraq as a caregiver and passed away under suspicious circumstances. NiDCOM confirmed that the Nigerian government had requested an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Furthermore, NiDCOM warned Nigerians about dishonest agents who entice young women with false claims of opportunities in Iraq. These deceptive promises often expose victims to dangerous situations, including forced labor and sex trafficking, upon their arrival in the country.
