South Korea Court Orders Arrest of Impeached President

A South Korean court issued an arrest warrant on Tuesday for the suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol, according to reports from the Yonhap News Agency. The warrant is tied to an investigation by the Corruption Investigation Office into Yoon’s sudden declaration of martial law on December 3.

The investigation office filed for the warrant on Monday after Yoon failed to respond to three separate summonses for questioning. Yonhap reported that this marks the first time a sitting South Korean president faces the prospect of arrest.

If Yoon is taken into custody, investigators will have 48 hours to decide whether to request an extension for further detention or to release him, Yonhap noted. However, efforts to carry out searches at the presidential office and Yoon’s official residence were blocked by the Presidential Security Service, which cited concerns over military security.

Yoon’s abrupt attempt to impose martial law stunned the country, but the decision was overturned just hours later in response to widespread public outcry.

The situation has plunged South Korea into political turmoil. On December 14, the National Assembly voted to impeach Yoon, leading the Constitutional Court to begin deliberations on whether the impeachment vote complies with the constitution.

Since Friday, Choi Sang Mok has stepped in as acting president after lawmakers also voted to impeach Han Duck Soo, who was serving as acting president following Yoon’s suspension. This marks a swift change in leadership just two weeks after Yoon’s removal.

Yoon, defending his actions, described his political adversaries as “anti-state forces” and claimed his declaration of martial law was necessary to safeguard the nation.
