The Delta State Police Command has reiterated the enforcement of its ban on fireworks as part of measures to ensure a safe and peaceful festive season.
This directive was highlighted in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, and shared with journalists in Warri on Thursday. The statement emphasized that the prohibition, which includes the use, sale, and display of pyrotechnics like firecrackers, knock-outs, and bangers, remains in full effect.
According to the state Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, the ban is necessary to curb crime during the yuletide. “This decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to prevent and reduce crime as experience shows that criminally minded persons can take advantage of this to unleash terror on law-abiding residents,” the statement read.
The Command warned parents and guardians to caution their children against the use of fireworks, while retailers have been instructed to cease the sale of these items. Violators will face arrest and prosecution.
To ensure compliance, the CP has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders to enforce the ban within their jurisdictions.
The statement also urged residents to report any incidents involving fireworks to the nearest police station or the command’s control room using the following numbers: 08036684974, 08114895600, and 08025666914.
The Delta State Police Command thanked the public for their continued cooperation and expressed optimism that these measures will contribute to a safer celebration for all residents.
