The Senate on Wednesday directed its Committee on Aviation to investigate the persistent delays and cancellations plaguing Nigeria’s aviation sector. The decision followed a motion by Senator AbdulFatai Buhari (APC Oyo North), who expressed concerns over the worsening situation, calling for urgent solutions to protect passengers and bolster the country’s socio-economic development.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace, Festus Keyamo; Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo; airline operators; and other key stakeholders have been summoned to address the issue.
Senator Buhari highlighted alarming statistics from the NCAA’s half-year report, which revealed that approximately 19,250 passengers faced long delays between January and June, while 19,274 pieces of luggage were lost. “This development is worrisome,” he said, emphasizing the importance of air travel as a reliable means of transportation for business and official purposes.
The Senator criticized the impact of these disruptions on Nigeria’s socio-economic growth, noting that the aviation sector’s inefficiencies could deter foreign investment and derail efforts at economic diversification. He also called for stricter enforcement of Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations of 2023, which outlines consumer protection measures.
“Many Nigerians are unaware that they are entitled to compensation for time lost due to unnecessary delays,” Buhari stated, urging the NCAA to ensure airline operators uphold international standards and prioritize customer satisfaction.
The Senate resolution aims to address these lapses, restore confidence in the aviation industry, and ensure passengers receive value for their money. The Committee on Aviation is expected to submit its findings and recommendations soon.
