The Ondo State Police Command disclosed on Tuesday that a prophetess named Mrs. Folashade Adekola has been detained in connection with the deaths of a woman, Jumoke Adesuwa, and her newborn inside her church.
Reports indicated that Adesuwa died from severe bleeding due to complications following childbirth at Mrs. Adekola’s church, located in the Oke-Aro area of Akure, the capital of Ondo State. The newborn did not survive either. The arrest followed after Adesuwa’s brother reported the incident to the authorities.
Confirming the arrest, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, stated that the prophetess had been taken to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department as part of ongoing inquiries.
“The incident was filed by the deceased woman’s brother, noting that his sister had died after delivering her baby at the church. The prophetess has been taken into custody, and investigations are actively underway,” Odunlami stated.
A family member, who chose to remain unnamed due to restrictions on speaking to the press, shared with PUNCH Metro that someone from the church had contacted Adesuwa’s husband to inform him of his wife’s delivery. The husband, along with another family member, rushed to the church.
“Upon arrival, they informed us that the baby did not make it but that the mother was alive. However, when we found her, she was bleeding excessively and lying in a pool of blood. We quickly moved her to the closest hospital.
“She was rejected at three hospitals due to her critical state, and she died at the fourth hospital during treatment. When we went back to the church to collect the baby’s body, we found it in a room that was clearly unsuitable for a delivery. We immediately reported the matter to the Oke-Aro Police Station in Akure, leading to the prophetess’s detention. The woman’s remains have since been placed in the mortuary,” the source recounted.
