In a shocking turn of events, Alex Ikwechegh, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, has publicly apologized for physically assaulting a Bolt driver who had come to deliver a package to him. The incident, which was captured on video and went viral, sparked widespread outrage and condemnation.
Ikwechegh acknowledged that his behavior fell short of the standards expected of a public official, saying, “As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behavior fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry.”
He expressed regret for the harm and embarrassment caused to the driver, Abuwatseya, his constituents, and the public at large. “I understand that my actions have caused harm and embarrassment to the driver, my constituents, and the nation at large,” Ikwechegh stated.
The lawmaker assured the public that he is cooperating fully with the Nigerian Police investigation and supports their efforts to ensure justice is served. “I want to assure the public that I am fully cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation into this matter. I support their efforts to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable.”
Ikwechegh also commended the Nigeria Police Force for upholding the law and protecting citizens’ rights. He appreciated the swift condemnation of his actions by his party and the police, demonstrating their commitment to upholding the law.
To prevent similar incidents in the future, Ikwechegh is seeking professional counseling and engaging in community service initiatives focused on promoting respect, empathy, and understanding. “We must work together to build a society where everyone is treated with dignity and respect,” he emphasized.
The incident began when Abuwatseya, the Bolt driver, arrived at Ikwechegh’s residence in Maitama, Abuja, to deliver a package. The lawmaker became enraged when the driver asked him to come out and collect the package, repeatedly slapping and insulting him. Ikwechegh even threatened to make the driver “disappear” without facing consequences.
Following the incident, Ikwechegh was invited for interrogation at the Maitama Divisional Police Headquarters. The police criticized him for involving the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in the incident, daring the driver to call him after the assault.
Ikwechegh’s apology comes as a welcome step towards accountability, but many Nigerians continue to demand stricter consequences for his actions.
