A tragic incident unfolded at Obada Idi-Emi High School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, Ogun State, as a student known simply as Ariyo reportedly passed away after receiving severe corporal punishment.

Reports indicate that a teacher allegedly disciplined Ariyo with 162 lashes of the cane after the student accidentally damaged a dustbin.

The details were shared by activist Adetoun on Instagram on Friday. According to her, the teacher had instructed Ariyo’s class not to damage the newly provided dustbin.

In a lighthearted manner, Ariyo had remarked that the dustbin was purchased with funds from the students, which allegedly irritated the teacher.

Following this exchange, the teacher reportedly approached the principal, who then directed that Ariyo be disciplined. Acting on these orders, the teacher allegedly administered 162 strokes of the cane, leading Ariyo to collapse during the punishment.

Adetoun further explained that school staff, including the teacher, hesitated before transporting Ariyo to the hospital, and unfortunately, by the time they arrived, Ariyo was declared deceased.

A senior police official familiar with the situation confirmed the occurrence, stating that although tensions arose locally due to the incident, the prompt intervention of the police helped to calm the situation. The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson has not yet commented on the matter.
