Former Nigerian goalkeeper for the Green Eagles, Peter Fregene, has passed away. The news of his passing was confirmed on Sunday by Segun Odegbami, a former international player and close friend.
According to Odegbami, the football legend, who had been on life support for a week, took his final breath with his wife, Tina, and two of his children by his side.
“Just moments ago, Peter ‘Apo’ Fregene, OLY, ex-goalkeeper for Nigeria’s Green Eagles, left this world to be with his creator. His passing was peaceful, witnessed by his loving wife and two of his children,” Odegbami shared on Sunday.
Known for his extraordinary reflexes and steadfast performance, Fregene represented Nigeria at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico and was a key figure in Nigerian football during the 1960s and 70s. His agility on the field earned him the nickname ‘Apo.’
In his message, Odegbami also expressed gratitude to those who supported Fregene during his illness, saying, “On behalf of all Nigerian football generations, Olympians, sports figures, his family, friends, fans, and the remarkable Nigerians who quietly offered their support, prayers, and care, keeping him with us until this moment, I extend a heartfelt ‘thank you.’”
