President Bola Tinubu has officially appointed Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria, following her Senate confirmation on September 25, 2024.
Kekere-Ekun took her oath of office and signed the oath register at the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja on Monday.
She replaces Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who served from June 27, 2022, until his retirement on August 22, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.
The ceremony was attended by three former Chief Justices, including the first female CJN, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, as well as Justices Mahmud Mohammed and Walter Onnoghen, along with her predecessor, Justice Ariwoola.
Family members and other Supreme Court justices were also in attendance. This is Kekere-Ekun’s second time taking the oath in five weeks; she was initially sworn in as acting Chief Justice by Tinubu on August 23, before her official confirmation by the Senate.
