Two Nigerian siblings were found guilty of sextortion and sentenced to 17 years and six months in prison by a US court.
Samson Ogoshi, 21, and Samuel Ogoshi, 24, of Lagos, Nigeria, were sentenced to 17 years and 6 months in prison and were to serve five years of supervised release after their release.
The two brothers were extradited to the United States to stand trial for allegedly plotting to take advantage of several minors for sex.
The US Justice Department said on its Facebook page on Thursday that their scheme resulted in the death of a 17-year-old high school student.
Male student Jordan DeMay was the victim; he attended a Michigan school.
The Ogochi brothers were alleged to have taken advantage of over 100 victims, 11 of whom were minors, in addition to DeMay.
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland stated in the same Facebook post, “These defendants sexually exploited and extorted more than 100 victims, including at least 11 minors, resulting in the tragic death of a 17-year-old high school student.”
US Attorney Mark Totten for the Western District of Michigan also responded to the ruling by saying, “Criminals who commit these schemes: you are not immune from justice.”We will track you down and hold you accountable, even if we have to go halfway around the world to do so,”
The information posted on its Facebook page claims that the Ogoshi brothers made fake profiles using social media accounts that had been hacked.
Additionally, they looked up information about their victims online to find out where they lived, went to school, had jobs, and who their friends and family were.
Following the completion of their research, they asked their minor victims to submit sexually explicit photos of themselves. Upon receiving the photos, they collaged the victim’s images with those of their friends, family, and school.
When the victim did not agree to use online cash applications to pay the Ogoshi brothers, they threatened to reveal the collages to the victim’s classmates, friends, and family.
In November 2022, the Ogoshi brothers and Ezekiel Robert, a Nigerian national, were charged in relation to the sextortion scheme that resulted in DeMay’s demise.
They entered a guilty plea in April after being extradited to the US in August 2023.
