The Lagos State Government has announced plans to distribute waste bags and bins to residents across the state. The initiative, aimed at promoting proper waste management, was revealed by the Lagos Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources in a statement on Sunday.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who flagged off a community-based environmental sanitation awareness program, emphasized the importance of proper waste bagging and disposal. He urged residents to take responsibility for their environment and prioritize cleanliness to prevent disease outbreaks.
Sanwo-Olu expressed concern over the littering of drains and removal of manholes, which he described as a harmful habit that must be stopped. He announced plans to constitute a team to tackle the issue of manhole removal and promised to lead the executive council in cleaning streets, neighborhoods, and desilting drainages every weekend.
The awareness campaign will be taken to all 57 local governments and LCDAs to ensure community participation in waste management. The government aims to create a culture of cleanliness and promote a healthy environment for residents.
The commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the importance of community participation in waste management and encouraged residents to imbibe the culture of cleaning their homes, surroundings, and drainages. He assured that LAWMA officials would be available to collect bagged waste and dispose of it properly.
The initiative coincides with the annual Tree Planting Day, which highlights the importance of tree planting in regulating temperature and mitigating the effects of climate change.
