The presidential candidate of the Labour Party for 2023, Peter Obi has discussed a merger between the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Obi responded to the possibility of receiving backing as a Southeast candidate in the 2027 presidential election by Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s 2023 flagbearer, in an interview that was posted on YouTube on Saturday on NoireTV-GlobalBlackTV.
In response to the interviewer’s question, the LP presidential candidate thanked Abubakar for mentioning that he might receive support because of the South-East candidate.
“I commend him and I am grateful for his statements, especially where he said he will support me if it (the presidential ticket) goes to the Southeast”, he stated.
But Obi made it clear that the welfare of Nigeria and its people comes before any political scheming or personal ambition.
Regarding the possibility of a PDP-LP merger, Obi stated that he was amenable to the notion as long as the result was to improve Nigerian governance and realize its enormous potential.
Obi made it clear that forming coalitions or mergers just to gain power or win elections is not something he is interested in.
In his words, he said, “I’m not desperate to be president, I’m desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor people because we have a lot of potential.
“If the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly, unlock all those things that will make Nigeria a better place, I’m for it.
“If it’s just a merger for election or state capture, I’m not for it or part of it, I don’t want to be part of anything like that.
The former governor of Anambra State emphasized the value of harmony and collaboration between people and organizations, but only when the goal is to improve Nigeria.
“It might be at the party level, it might be at the individual level, might be at any level, but we must come together to be able to build a better Nigeria,” he noted.
