The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has announced the appointment of Finidi George as the new head coach of the Super Eagles, the country’s senior men’s national football team. The announcement was made on Monday via a statement on the NFF’s official website.
George, a former Nigerian international and member of the iconic “Golden Generation,” takes over the reins of the Super Eagles after serving as assistant coach to Jose Peseiro for 20 months. He assumed interim leadership of the team in March and oversaw two friendly matches against Ghana and Mali in Morocco.
Under George’s leadership, the Super Eagles secured a historic 2-1 victory over Ghana, ending an 18-year winless streak against the Black Stars. However, the team suffered a setback in the subsequent match, losing 0-2 to Mali.
George’s appointment is seen as a nod to his impressive playing career, which spanned multiple tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He won 62 caps for Nigeria and was a key member of the team that clinched the 1994 AFCON title and emerged as the second most entertaining side in their debut FIFA World Cup appearance in 1994.
The NFF’s decision to appoint George as the new head coach is a testament to his experience, expertise, and passion for Nigerian football. As a member of the “Golden Generation,” George is expected to bring a wealth of knowledge and leadership to the Super Eagles, who are currently preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
George’s immediate task will be to guide the Super Eagles to victory in their upcoming matches against South Africa and the Benin Republic, which are crucial to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. With his experience and expertise, Nigerian football fans are optimistic that George will lead the Super Eagles to success and restore the team’s glory days.
