The recent actions taken by Dr. Mansur Nagoda, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board, following an unscheduled executive supervision visit to Kabo General Hospital, underscore a commitment to accountability and quality healthcare delivery in the state. During the visit, which included officials from the Kano Centre for Disease Control and the State Agency for the Control of AIDS, significant deficiencies were identified, prompting swift disciplinary measures.

One of the most concerning issues uncovered during the visit was the extortion of patients by certain staff members within the X-ray unit. Dr. Nagoda revealed that three officers were caught charging patients N12,000 for X-rays, a substantial deviation from the approved hospital price of N2,000. Moreover, there were no documents to substantiate these unauthorized charges, indicating a blatant abuse of power and exploitation of vulnerable individuals seeking medical assistance. As a consequence, Dr. Nagoda rightly approved the immediate dismissal of these officers, sending a clear message that such unethical behavior will not be condoned within the healthcare system.

Furthermore, the suspension of the accountant, auditor, and head of the laboratory for selling free HIV test kits provided by the state government highlights another instance of misconduct and breach of trust. These individuals were entrusted with essential resources meant to facilitate the provision of critical healthcare services, yet they chose to betray this trust for personal gain. Their suspension serves as a reminder that public resources must be used judiciously and ethically to ensure equitable access to healthcare for all citizens.

Beyond issues of financial malpractice, the visit also revealed serious deficiencies in the infrastructure and management of the hospital. The labor ward was found to be dilapidated, lacking basic amenities such as bed sheets and proper sanitation. Additionally, valuable equipment donated to the facility years ago was found to be abandoned, further underscoring a failure in asset management and stewardship. Dr. Nagoda’s commitment to addressing these systemic issues and upholding standards of excellence in healthcare provision is commendable.

In conclusion, Dr. Mansur Nagoda’s decisive actions in response to the findings of the executive supervision visit to Kabo General Hospital demonstrate a firm commitment to transparency, accountability, and the welfare of patients. By holding individuals accountable for their actions and addressing systemic deficiencies within the healthcare system, Dr. Nagoda is taking important steps towards ensuring that every citizen has access to quality healthcare services in Kano State. Such measures are essential for restoring public trust in the healthcare system and fostering a culture of integrity and professionalism amongst healthcare workers.
