The Premier League came into existence on 20 February 1992 when clubs from the old First Division decided to leave the Football League and form a new elite competition. The objective was to build a league with stronger commercial appeal, increase income from television rights, and bring a fresh structure to the game.

Action in the newly created league began on 15 August 1992, with 22 teams taking part. From that point, it replaced the First Division as the highest level of professional football in England.

Over time, certain clubs have gained a reputation for moving up and down between the Premier League and the EFL Championship. Their frequent promotions show their ability to recover quickly after relegation, as well as how competitive the system is.

Since the league’s launch in 1992, a handful of teams have stood out for earning the most promotions back into the top flight, often returning shortly after dropping out.

According to BBC Sport, these are the 15 clubs with the highest number of promotions in the Premier League era:

1. West Bromwich Albion
2. Norwich City
3. Crystal Palace

Four Promotions

5. Watford
6. Sheffield United
7. Leicester City
8. Fulham

10. Leeds United
11. Aston Villa
