The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed 16-count charges against former Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, his son Chinedum, and three others for allegedly misappropriating N47 billion.
The accused, including a former Commissioner of Finance, Dr. Philip Nto, a government contractor, Obioma King, and a former Director of Finance, Romas Madu, were arraigned before the Abia State High Court on Friday. They pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The EFCC alleges that Orji and the other accused misappropriated:
– N22.5 billion allocated for security votes from 2011 to 2015
– N13 billion from a loan facility granted by the defunct Diamond Bank
– N12 billion from the Paris Club refund
– N10.5 billion from a loan granted by First Bank meant for state and local governments
– N2 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria funds for small and medium enterprises
The Chief Judge of Abia State, Justice Lilian Abai, granted bail to the defendants and adjourned the case until June 18 and 19, 2025, for trial.
