The Labour Party (LP) has expressed confidence in its ability to secure victory in Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election without forming coalitions with other political parties. National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh emphasized the party’s strong grassroots support and its performance in the 2023 elections as indicators of its potential to independently challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ifoh stated that the LP has not been approached for any coalition discussions and believes it can win future elections on its own merits. He noted that while the idea of a coalition isn’t dismissed outright, any such proposal would be carefully scrutinized for its merits and demerits.
This stance comes amid speculation about potential alliances among opposition parties, including the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Both NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso and LP’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi have denied involvement in any coalition talks.
In contrast, PDP’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, has argued that unseating the APC in 2027 would require a merger that includes the PDP, citing the party’s consistent electoral successes and nationwide presence.
As the 2027 elections approach, discussions about potential alliances and strategies among Nigeria’s political parties are expected to intensify, with each party evaluating the best path to electoral success.
